Construction >> Marine Installations

Taranis Contracting has the equipment, staff, and expertise to complete in-water marine work including break wall construction and the development of new and rehabilitated fish habitat. Our quarry development experience, equipment, and know how allow us to manufacture and screen the stone needed in break wall and marine construction.

Taranis Materials was awarded the $1.3 million High Hills Marina Break Wall project on Lake Nipigon in 2006 by the Municipality of Greenstone. This included building a rubble mound break wall approximately 3.0 meters wide and approximately 8 meters in height. The 100,000 tonnes of rock for the break wall came from a rock quarry which was established by Taranis located 1.km from the site. The quarry was stripped of overburden, its rock evaluated, and a drilling and blasting schedule established. Once the rock had been blasted, we sized it to project specifications using our mobile crusher and transported it to the site via triaxle dump trucks. After project completion, Taranis rehabilitated the quarry according to required specifications and guidelines.

In addition, fish spawning areas were constructed near the lakeshore using land based construction equipment and artificial habitat design methods. Spawning pockets were established within the break wall consisting of smaller rock and cobble between large boulders. This part of the project was awarded late and had to be completed within six weeks to fit the strict fish spawning season. Despite bad weather and a tight schedule, Taranis completed the entire project ahead of schedule and on budget.
